I never used to talk about this.
Most people know me for my work in tech. Some know I write. But almost no one knows I once took part in an Arctic expedition — one that nearly ended in disaster.
There were eight at the beginning. Only five made it home.
Our tent was shredded by storms. A frozen lake cracked splintered and boomed like artillery beneath our skis. And in the white Arctic silence, I learned more about life, fear and resilience than any boardroom, workshop or seminar could ever teach.
I buried that chapter for years. It felt like a youthful misadventure — a reckless pursuit of something wild and cold and far away. But recently, I’ve come to realise how much of me was shaped up there in the snow. How much of that experience lives quietly beneath everything I’ve done since.
- How I lead.
- How I stay calm when the ground shifts.
- How I face the unknown.
And so, with the encouragement of a good friend, I’ve turned that experience into something new.
Something I hope might help others.
Introducing Cold Lessons
A short, honest audio piece — 20 minutes long — designed to be listened to while walking.
It’s not about polar bears or frostbite or the gear we carried. It’s about what happens when life strips everything away — and you’re left with only what you believe, who you trust, and whether you’ll keep going.
“It’s calming. Deep. Like being read to… by someone who’s lived through it.” Listener Feedback - USA.
Cold Lessons was made for the people navigating their own storm.
Not just in the Arctic, but in life:
- Grief.
- Illness.
- Divorce.
- Bullying.
- Financial collapse.
- Doubt.
That quiet moment when something you thought was unshakeable breaks — and you’re not sure what’s left.
I didn’t make it to impress.
I made it because I wish I’d had something like this — back when I was unsure, afraid and trying to hold it all together.
I made it because silence can be heavy.
And sometimes, you just need a voice walking beside you.
"It’s lovely. I really enjoyed it. Very soothing.” Listener Feedback - UK.
Final Thought
We all have an Arctic.
It might not be snow and ice. It might be a hospital room, a courtroom, a house you once called home. But we all have that season — that breaking point — that forces us to discover who we really are.
Cold Lessons is just one man’s way through.
